What sizes do carbon fiber tubes come in, and should I choose roll-wrapped or pultruded?

Zbrehon’s standard round tubes run from 6 mm OD with a 4 mm ID[1] up to 20 mm OD with an 18 mm ID[2]. Choose a roll-wrapped (woven) tube when you need a visible plain or twill finish, a color or strength in more than one direction. Choose a pultruded tube when you need a straight, stiff, consistent profile at volume.

How do the two tube types differ?

Roll-wrapped carbon fiber tubes are described in the catalogue as combining a high strength-to-weight ratio with stiffness, with custom color, size, length, thickness and plain or twill finish[3]. Pultruded tubes are made by continuous pultrusion, which keeps quality consistent from tube to tube[4].

In pultrusion the fibers run along the length of the tube. That gives high stiffness along the tube and steady dimensions, the catalogue’s stated features[5][6]. If the tube will be squeezed, twisted or clamped hard, ask for a roll-wrapped tube or for extra wall thickness and describe the load in your inquiry.

Which standard round sizes are listed?

All sizes are outside diameter / inside diameter, in mm.

  • Small tubes: 6/4[7], 7/5[8] and 8/6[9].
  • Mid sizes: 10/8[10], 14/12[11] and 16/14[12].
  • Thicker 2 mm walls: 10/6[13], 12/8[14] and 16/12[15].

Standard lengths are 500 mm[16] or 1000 mm[10], depending on the code. Color, size, length, thickness and plain or twill weave can be customized[17].

Are square carbon fiber tubes available?

Yes, as pultruded square tubes. Small profiles start at 1.4 × 1.4 mm with a 0.8 mm round bore[18] and go up to 10 × 10 mm with an 8 mm bore[19]. Square-inside versions are listed at 3 × 3 × 2, 4 × 4 × 3 and 5 × 5 × 4 mm[20][21][22]. Standard length is 1000 mm[23], and size, length and thickness can be customized[24].

What should I send with a tube inquiry?

  • The product code closest to your size, or your OD, ID and length.
  • Roll-wrapped or pultruded, and the finish: plain, twill, matte or glossy, and color.
  • How the tube is loaded: bending, twisting, crushing or clamping.
