Which AR glass fiber should I use for GRC and concrete: chopped strands, roving or mat?

Pick the form by your production process. Use chopped strands when you mix fiber into the mortar, roving when you spray or chop on site, and mat when you laminate into a mold. All three Zbrehon AR forms list a zirconia (ZrO2) content of at least 16.7%[1][2][3], which is what makes the glass alkali resistant.

When are chopped strands the right choice?

Chopped strands are added to the concrete or mortar mix. They are used to improve the tensile and flexural strength of concrete and to resist cracking[4]. Typical uses are mortar and concrete reinforcement (GFRC), fireplace surrounds and decorative countertops[5].

Check these figures on the quote:

  • Cut length. Zbrehon lists 6, 12, 18, 20, 24, 30 and 36 mm[6].
  • Filament diameter: 13±2, 11±2 or 15±2 µm[7].
  • Strand tex: 76±8, 40±5 or 98±10[8].
  • Moisture content, listed as at most 0.2%[9], and sizing content of 0.8-2.0%[10].
  • Breaking strength, listed as at least 0.32 N/tex[11].

The minimum order for AR chopped strands is 100 kg[12].

When should I use AR roving?

Roving is a continuous strand, so it suits spray-up GRC, where the gun chops it on site. The Zbrehon AR roving lists a roving tex of 2700±270[13], an elastic modulus of 80.4 GPa[14] and a breaking strength of at least 0.30 N/tex[15]. Its softening temperature is 860 °C[16], and it is an incombustible inorganic material[17]. Ask for stiffness too: it is listed as at least 120 mm[18].

When does AR mat make sense?

AR mat is used for hand lay-up, laminating into a negative mold or over a positive form[19]. It comes in 150, 225 and 300 g/m²[20] at a width of 1000 mm[21], with a listed breaking strength of 37.00 N/150 mm[22]. The minimum order is 100 square meters[23].

What should I ask any AR fiber supplier?

  • The zirconia content and the test method behind it.
  • A test report for strength after alkali exposure.
  • Batch numbers on every carton, so a problem can be traced.
  • A sample for a trial mix before the full order.
